Our 10th Outdoor Art Installation: "Connecting New Braunfels to the World"
Our Connecting New Braunfels to the World mural was completed in December 2023. The mural celebrates the arrival of the railroad in New Braunfels in 1880, which greatly affected the economy by allowing the shipping and receiving of goods, and also led to the beginning of tourism in this area.
The mural was painted by artist Mindy Allen, using brush and airbrush. Research for this project was provided by the New Braunfels Railroad Museum, which is housed in the 1907 I&GN Railroad Station, across San Antonio Street from the mural.

The first railroad company to come to New Braunfels was the International & Great Northern Railroad.
The company had been acquired by the industrialist and financier Jay Gould in 1880. In 1898 Gould's oldest daughter, Helen Gould Shepard, visited New Braunfels. She saw a beautiful piece of land owned by Harry Landa, and proposed that her father's company build a railroad spur to the area, so that the public could visit. This area would be known as "Landa's Park" and later, "Landa Park." The park would become a popular tourist destination.
I&GN was bought out by a subsidiary of the Missouri Pacific Railroad in 1926. Missouri Pacific merged into the Union Pacific Railroad System in 1986, and donated the 1907 station to the city of New Braunfels. The station would become home for the New Braunfels Railroad Museum.
